Day 159 (of 186) the learning society

Day 159 (of 186) the learning society

I’ve been thumbing through my dads old journal and stumbled on a Thinking I like – the learning society. What the learning shows it values is what society expects….and can it work the other way??

Is passing “the exam” what teaching and learning is about? Once upon a time a “common knowledge” was needed to run empires. A common understanding of how to do math, reading and writing was key to get Alignment across cultures. What to learn was important.

I now see learning as more about the “why”. I know some still feel that learning what a math algorithm does is enough, but o think understanding why and how it works makes a stronger connection to understand the bigger picture – a higher quality than “2 + 2 = 4 because it just does”. That mindset makes it easier to be convinced a la George Orwell’s 1984 that 2 + 2 = 5 “just because it does” and we need a Learning Society to do more – but more in depth not more at a surface level.

Will our society focus on what can be learned, or merely what can be examined via test?
