Day 116 (of 186) still that time of year for “a reminder”
I thought I might not need to write this post – for the past couple of years it has been bang on day 113…..”that time of year” https://technolandy.wordpress.com/2017/03/02/day-113-of-185-that-time-between-new-years-and-spring-break/
Not the time educators are set and ready to “expect the unexpected” – more notable right before the ‘bigger breaks’ of winter and summer – which is why a reminder is needed:
THIS IS A TOUGH TIME OF YEAR
I know in our area the amount of snow we have is getting on people’s nerves – I mean it is great that I am getting great value out of our cross country skis, but the snow-pot-holes are a bit much – and I know I’m not the only one who gave up shovelling my driveway expecting rains to disperse the snow by now and instead ended up with a wall of ice to navigate my vehicle over. Oops.
It may be my class makeup that I’m not seeing as many “suddenly struggling” but because we’ve all had heavier emotional backpacks for much of the year BUT this year we had a whole school intervention on Zones of Regulation with the amazing @laurapaiement – so we’ve been paying extra attention to how we are doing….and putting some interventions in place – more movement breaks, sketch pads, quiet times (aka boredom breaks)
So maybe I’ve been subconsciously adding extra support layers – both at school and home – to better manage this time of year…..but…kids have “flu” and I know I might have fallen asleep on the couch so…. 😴 and just realized that the time changes this weekend as we “spring” ahead an hour…..
I think the biggest reminder is that this particular time of year isn’t as easy as it should be on paper:
More light with longer sun shine
Spring break coming up (2 weeks for many districts) – though it will mean that the first week of April is going to have some pains…..
Well past “hundreds day”
But this time of year is complex. So….if you’re feeling a little more tired (or crankier) than usual….it’s not just you. And if you’re feeling particularly upbeat right now….don’t rub it in!
So….make some healthy choices. Reconnect. Blog. Draw. Walk (watch for puddles!!) Sleep well. Slow down. If you do homework….ease off – in fact try a couple of “no homework days” and test (pun) it out! If there are things that don’t have to be done….don’t start or add them. Try a maker space. Explore Design Thinking. Build a coping step plan as a group.
Let’s make “this time of year” a positive time for a change! We will all benefit!
