Day 93 (of 186) shifting the days of learning themes

I’ve been loving the thematic days I’ve started 2018 with. A day of Math. A day of social learning. A day of art.  All been good days – especially with the Finnish schedule of 45 minutes of work and a 15 minute break.

Except when someone is absent. Miss “the” day of math – it might be awhile until the next day of math.

A slight tweak….

Instead of “Day of Science”, we ran a “Day of the Moon” to tie into the Blue/Blood/Lunar Eclipse moon. But a mix of writing (how to talk to an alien – emojis) and math (introduce area of a circle – including what Pi is…..good way to blow some minds!) and of course some science……and some design thinking (designing a space base or vehicle)

And I kind of like the shift in themes…..

This week included days of Communication  #s  Techie-ness on [T(ec)hursday] and Thinking – the non-academic titles allowing some ongoing work on how to “write” to an alien)  while also emphasizing some co-thematic work (Science Fiction Story Writing).

The theme days are working well, but shifting the titles is allowing me to feel better about doing some math each day and continuing to work on silent reading and having the class “read for pleasure” – a key goal of the majority of the class – but a day of reading vs reading each day…..

Still a work in progress but we are progressing!!
