Day 171 (of 185) sign says: cram season <– is this Learning?
Drove by a tutorial place with a sign outside: time to cram for finals!
For me thinking of the times where I used to “cram”. Funny thing is I can remember the times (all-nighters) for cramming, but don’t remember much (any) of the content. And even my oldest differentiates her classes finals by subjects she values and will retain and those that she is looking forward to deleting the factoids and get ready for what’s next.
And it got me thinking about ‘finals’ – how much “cramming” for short term memorization/repetition is going on vs demonstrating what was learned over the term-of-learning? It made me make a connection to an article about ‘too much screen time’ http://miami.cbslocal.com/2017/03/03/doc-claims-too-much-screen-time-turns-kids-into-digital-junkies/ and how tablets haven’t been shown to improve test scores…..which they shouldn’t. When there was a need for everyone to have the same knowledge base (except for those wanting to go on jeopardy!) one-size-fits-all assessments & evaluations seemed to make sense……
It may be “Cramming Season” but….to which end? To review and refresh what was Learned? Or to try to improve a score on a task and then forget about it….being mindful about ‘why’ matters more and more as we are better able to personalize both learning and how to asses and evaluate what and how the individual learned.
