Day 145 (of 183) school district budgets. An interesting start to 2016/17

Day 145 (of 183) school district budgets. An interesting start to 2016/17

With declining enrolments and ever increasing costs, budget times in the school districts I have been part of have required some “creative thinking”

In my district, a lot of advance work was done to get input from the communities via town hall setups: http://www.castanet.net/news/Vernon/156213/School-changes-feared

With the dispute being closing schools vs ending programs. After starting school closure process, the board then voted to extend the process by a year http://globalnews.ca/news/2567501/north-okanagan-shuswap-school-closure-decision-delayed/

As the budget process was put into question http://gossip-monthly.com/educationnews/budget-becomes-new-source-of-controversy-in-school-district/41233

And an upcoming board meeting will decide what’s next……

Because some districts have decided to do different, including SD72 looking at reducing prep-teachers by “reducing” the school week http://www.comoxvalleyrecord.com/news/377703131.html?mobile=true

And both Vancouver school board not voting for a balanced budget http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vsb-budget-vote-results-1.3558469
And Saanich following their lead http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/british-columbia/saanich-school-board-says-it-won-t-balance-its-budget-1.3559008

I know a few colleagues who attended a uLead conference in Banff earlier in the week. The unanimous feeling was that sometimes education is a tad ‘different’ west of the Rockies. Lots more news and decisions yet to come!!
