Day 101 (of 183) The golden rule – with a twist

Day 101 (of 183) The golden rule – with a twist

This year has had our school start taking a look at creating (re-visioning) our school code of conduct. Taking the lead from colleagues who have had good experiences recently, we are working with our entire school community….starting with the students.

The first word coming out was that we wanted our school to be “nice”. When we dissected that word, we got that we want the school (unsurprisingly ) to be Safe, have Respect for all people and things, and be Responsible for our actions as well as those around us.

One piece I really appreciated as we looked at Respect was the idea of ‘the golden rule’….

which of course is meant to be “treat others as you want to be treated”…..

but what if you like to hug and the ‘other’ does not…..we started to reframe the “rule” as “treat others the way THEY want to be treated”.  It was a nice tie-in to our thinking about framing our code of conduct using “green thoughts” (positive language) instead of a list of “dont’s”- and a nice segue into being mindful about how you think and treat others is influenced by how you think and treat yourself.

  1. Stacey K says:

In our house, we frame it as you *teach* people how you want to be treated by how you treat them. Kind of a round-about way of getting to “Treat people how you want to be treated”, but adding in a bit of self-reflection, karma, pond-ripple type thinking: You get back what you send out.
