Day 38 (of 188) pro-d at #cuebc #bcedbloggers

I love the provincial professional development day! So many sessions workshops and events across the province! I am attending @cuebc to promote eportfolios (and also to hear from @willrich45 whose book “why school” greatly influenced my work)

Today: thoughts session by session

Keynote: Will Richardson

Wow. Just wow. Talking about disruptions – the world today isn’t like the world “we” grew up in – why do some schools/classrooms try to replicate what once was?

So much access to an abundance of information – people – tools –

Abundance is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed.

At school: put tech away. Out of school: using tech to communicate, learn, be creative, etc

College ready or learning ready.
Great subtle challenge by @willrich45 at #cuebc

Session 2: our presentation

Kyle Timms and I shared our learning communities journeys away from report cards an to eportfolios. Slide how will be found in my ‘presentation link’: https://technolandy.wordpress.com/disruptive-classroom/

Give me a tweet/email/call/visit for more info!

@willrich part deux

Chatting about “literacies” including ‘proficiency with the tools of technology’ which includes:
Social media
Multimedia
Apps
Mobile
Programming
Gaming (bigger than music industry and gaining on the movie industry…)

So much to encapsulate & debrief – just such an amazing topic to discuss and deconstruct – my takeaway:
Poetry is Twitter. Blogs are short stories. Choose good ones!!

3-D printers

Very interesting session on 3-D printer options. While unique now, I can see it being a common site in the not-to-distant-future. It can get quite complex, but in a ‘guided gradual release of responsibility’ mindset, I can see benefits to “tinkering” at all ages – from personalized pencil grips or fidgets (still a significant of my students working with anxiety) to custom cremations and designs as learners grow and become more able to guide their own learning & creating. And of course the expected tech warning/caution/guideline: sometimes you get what you pay for!

Such a great provincial professional development day! Made some bonus connections (road trip to Lillooet in the plans to talk “connected classrooms” and debate report cards vs eportfolios) and put a bunch of faces to avatars! Showing the benefit and power of expanding my Professional Learning Network (PLN) both asynchronous and face-to-face!

Now for the drive home…!! AKA: reflection time!
