Day 114 (of 184) is education system ‘comfort food’ or …

Today was the third in our school districts series of mini-edcamps. One of our discussions was on educational change.

We had a very good discussion about why it is that changing education can be tough. I was a little hungry so I made a connection to food: for many, the school system is a ‘comfort food’ – there is great comfort if school looks/smells/feels like the school ‘we’ went to…
Spelling tests, mad minutes, cursive script practice…kinda feels like the meals ‘mom used to make’…..but sometimes the good old days…weren’t.

There is a time and place for change. My first car had am radio. Only. Serviceable but … my satellite radio is superior in all ways. The eye surgery my grandma once had that involved lots of cutting is now done via lasers. While part of me still fondly remembers carefully tuning my radio to bring in bits & pieces of late night radio, I much prefer the variety of channels over the variety of challenges.

Should education be a ‘nouveau cuisine’? Where chefs like Gordon Ramsey take those comfort foods and reimagine them: healthier, richer, a different soon on ‘memories’. Instead of focusing on spelling tests, tearing apart letter patterns and ‘making words’. Instead of ‘mad minutes’ showing multiple methodologies to solve problems. Instead of cursive script, synthesizing reading & writing.

And sometimes…

Fusion cooking. Blending & taking new looks and new approaches (like using propane torches & dry ice in cooking). Concepts like flipped classrooms, geniushour, self organized learning environments, standards-based-grading, eportfolios, etc – there are some powerful tools being practiced in schools which are changing & improving (and better understanding/communicating) learning.

Like it or not…Disruptions occur…
Blockbuster continued its focus on DVD rentals.
The music industry missed the impact online sales (iTunes) would have on them.
McDonalds expanded its menu from just hamburgers…
Have you noticed what types of lightbulbs are no longer available….

Moms cooking was great. Still is. In small doses on occasional visits. Now I’ve got a broader menu I want to try for myself….and for my kids.
