Day 78 (of 184) sharing learning
Today was interesting as I started preparing two things for Friday:
1. One of my teachers and myself will be at a BCSSA regional forum on innovations as we share some of our work on #geniushour
2. Prepare for the arrival of a POC – a principal-on-call
Our work on geniushour has been very interesting this year. In part because it’s the first time in a long time that I have had the opportunity to ‘loop’ with a class of learners. And starting year two already set and ready to go was very awesome. Especially as many learners picked up and carried on where they want.
Today’s prep included a final check on our slides to share on Friday and make sure we have our mental bullet points lined up for what we want to share. And I loved how my partner summarized one of our key goals: when you have the opportunity to do something that you enjoy so much that you enter a state of ‘flow’ and time rushes past.
Or as another teacher summarized the end of the first day of 2014 – ‘the final bell caught us all with our pants down’ – nobody was ready for the dismissal/head to the buses bell.
There should be more of these moments in education.
And I hope my janitor doesn’t hate me for LOVING when classes run out of time to clean up because they were so involved in their learning!
Secondly our district is trying out a ‘principal-on-call’ model to bring in experienced administrators to handle ‘unusual days’ – mainly those days that normally have me blending teaching and principaling. So this will be a first visit by an ‘outsider’ to be ‘principal-for-a-day’ in our learning community.
I want to make sure that he has flexibility in his day (a lot of student-led activities including geniushour) and that he has a chance to get a feel for some of the work we have done – mainly can he ‘see’ some of the amazing ‘work behind the scenes’ that the staff has done to work on self-regulation and prepare for a (voluntary) shift from report cards to eportfolios.
I think it will be neat to have an experienced principal ‘take a look under our hood’ and give us his thought on how he sees our engine revving!
It’s 2014 and my 184 Days of Learning Blog is continuing! Hope I make it through this first very busy week!!
