Day 69 (of 184) vision
Sometimes random readings bring up some neat discussion ideas. Today I was thinking about what we have done in our learning community in the past year and a half that I was lucky enough to be invited to join it.
We have been balancing a push for doing things ‘different’ (school goals on self regulation and technology integration) while still focusing on mastering key skills (reading, writing, numeracy). And at the same time having a lot of discussions around assessment and reporting – or as we are shifting it: communicating student learning (looking at using portfolios instead of traditional report cards).
And then the statement came to me. And I really wish I knew I could remember if it came from a reading, a video, a conversation, a meme….
“One eye on the past, the other on the future”
This is the statement that I think validates what I have been encouraging – standing on the shoulders of the education leaders who came before us (and acknowledging the work that they did) while keeping an eye on doing what is best for our learners, even if it means doing something completely different than what was done in the past.
I’m going to think about this some more….
