Summer of learning: ShortCourse day 4: legal day

Always a difficult day at ShortCourse because of the depth of information that is possible to discuss around school law.

I think that the best advice was around communication. An education leader cannot be totally insulated when dealing with sensitive issues – but if the decision is done with good intentions, that can be very helpful….

Consider when a ‘search’ needs to be done: is it being done ‘just because’? are you confident (not beyond a reasonable doubt, but is the circumstantial evidence strong) in what and why you are searching? are you searching to get somebody into or out of trouble?

There are a wide range of legal considerations when becoming a principal or vice principal but key is that ‘expected standard of conduct’ which ties in nicely to the social media world of today: the role of principal is 24/7. Be ready and embrace it!
