Summer of learning: ShortCourse day 3

The morning started with an interesting comment on the radio from espn’s Colin Cowherd. He was talking about ‘personalities’ (actors athletes writers etc) essentially either being on multiple platforms or being dinosaurs. Those that don’t adapt and/or work with change are doomed to be left ‘behind’.

Then we had a presentation by former Superintendent Bruce Beairsto who had a similar message (albeit in different wording) for Principals and Vice Principals at our ShortCourse – to be part of the change occurring in education.

In particular knowing how to balance, and when to be in each role of a ‘manager’ and a ‘leader’. In a sense, if a principal sees the job as being ‘in the office’ then they are being ‘left behind’ as the job continues to change.

To be both a manager and a leader, a principal needs to communicate with the entire learning community – and this requires multiple platforms and multiple mindsets. Sitting in the office working on a monthly newsletter isn’t going to cut it anymore…it is time to model and be part of the changes in education within each and every learning community!
