Sports analogies to education

I’m finding myself using more and more sports analogies of late. I’m not sure if its because I’m a football guy and miss the cfl/nfl seasons or because I’m leading my school district hockey pool or because my staff is entirely female and I’m trying to over compensate.

In either case I have enjoyed making some (what I consider to be) clear connections:

When coaching technioque (golf swing, tackling, etc) descriptive feedback is a lot more meaningful than a score out of 10 (unless its a perfect ten).

Choosing leadership is vital – and the wrong head coach working with the wrong team (no matter how much talent is on the roster) can see some great disappointments! Yet when the right leader is working with the right team, amazing accomplishments can be achieved!

Practice is important to some (but I can still hear Allen Iversons question about practice – more specifically, missing it) but at the end of the day, a lot of attention is paid to the results in a game – and ask any coach, how a practice goes is no guarantee of game performance!
Also there are elements being watched within a game that most observers have no idea of – just ask any offensive line coach in football.
Also there is much more to the game than just the scoreboard.
Also practice might not be vital for everybody, but the previously mentioned Iverson did not win an NBA championship…

There are a lot of armchair quarterback/coaches watching what goes on in education. There are a range of good and ….unique thoughts from the armchair.

There is always next season (says the lifelong Seahawks/mariner/Canuck fan) to do better than last year!
